I took home Gumdrop on Monday night, he was due for euthanasia on Tuesday morning, he's a semi feral dog with the only thing on his mind is escaping. He came to PACC as a stray after he was jumping into people's yards to be with their dogs. He had to be trapped by officers and ended up at the shelter for 83 days before going up on the euthanasia list. While in shelter he escaped the play yards multiple times and couldn't be trusted in playgroup cause he just wanted to leave. He could only be handled by more experienced volunteers due to being fearful of being leashed and unleashed in the kennel, with potential to fear bite. His adoptability chances were so low in an over flowing shelter with no home notes and flight risk and potential bite risk if pushed, so he was put on the list.
Anyway, I like the feral things. They don't have to like me, they just have to not eat my animals and I'm good with that. Gumdrop has been a very good boy here, yes he looks at the fence and wants to hop it, but we keep him tied to me so he can't. He's nervous of the cats and avoids them and he likes all the dogs, especially the other boys. He's a guys guy for sure. He walks beautifully on the leash - we must thank the incredible volunteers for that effort because he's a semi feral dog that walks at your side and it's amazing. He's only been here a couple days so we are still adapting. My only issue is he gets weird at night (I was warned about that by volunteers) . He is so "normal" during the day but at night he cries and cries and paces and paces. We tried crating, letting him be free, sedatives and nothing helps. I'm on day 9 with no sleep (I wasn't sleeping when we had feral puppy Seven and Cocoa being sick). I just need sleep so bad. Anyone have a lot of land with three houses that I can have? One for Christopher, one for grandparents and one for anxious feral dogs that don't sleep? That way I can bounce between the three and be perfectly happy? Haha
Anyways Gumdrop is good, I have a fear of him escaping but so far so good. He lives with cats well, loves dogs, ignores livestock and is learning to eat in the crate. He walks well on leash and is a very good boy in the house during the day. So far in the home environment I wouldn't call him a bite risk at all. He's been startled a few times and snapping isn't a reaction of his. I'm not able to touch him yet but he comes up to me regularly to check me out when he thinks I'm not paying attention, I love the curiosity. ![]()
